Fantasy Football League Management Site
Online Fantasy Football League Management Goes Live
Challenge:
The game of Fantasy Football has been around for over three decades. The management of the game, however, has evolved over the past ten years. The game consists of drafting professional football players to different teams in a league and playing head-to-head match-ups using weekly statistics. Originally, the winners and losers were determined from calculating the statistics found in the weekly paper. Later, the first generation tools used PC software to download weekly stats, calculate winners and losers, and generate reports and schedules for distribution to team members. The latest generation in fantasy management is using the Web.
Problem:
With the start up and failures of many dot-coms throughout the country, it was necessary to build a very lean organization. The competition for fantasy league management software is high, while the cost of entry is relatively low. The software needed to be very user-friendly with maximum flexibility and minimal support requirements. It needed to rival the benefits of using PC software, while gaining the flexibility and operability of using the Web. In addition, the system needed to be scaleable in order to accommodate from 10 to 10,000 leagues.
Solution:
CaseStudyWe designed a dynamic website built on a Microsoft platform for flexible development and easy scalability. All administration and presentation pages were built using Microsoft's ASP (Active Server Page) for editing, validating, and display capabilities. COM and DCOM objects were built using Microsoft Visual Basic in conjunction with Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS), which allowed distributed transactions across servers. To permit maximum communications, SQL*Server 7 databases were utilized as back-end databases. Batch programs were developed to upload daily statistics, calculate weekly scores, and send confirmation emails.
